Survey researchers use many tactics to try to maximise response rates and to minimise differences in response rates between population subgroups. These may include the use of different modes of approach, the timing of requests, incentives, persuasive messaging, attractive design, and so on. But years of research has repeatedly demonstrated that not all survey sample members react in the same way to these tactics. Offering an incentive, for example, may make some people more likely to participate but may have the opposite effect on other people. Recognising this heterogeneity in the effects of survey design features, recent years have seen the spread of targeted survey designs, in which design features may be targeted to particular subsets of the sample rather than applied uniformly to all. This workshop will show participants how to use targeted designs effectively in their surveys. We will outline the steps involved in coming up with a good design, and will present tried-and-tested examples. Participants will then engage in developing and discussing their own ideas.
